Criss-Cross Cream Cheese Danishes

January 29, 2021

A simple and delightfully tasty recipe for homemade danishes for your breakfast menu or as an afternoon treat.

I finally found time to be in the kitchen, and it was the self-care I needed! There's nothing more refreshing to me than baking a treat and sharing it with my family. And I was well overdue. I knew I wanted to keep it low-key and simple, but also something creative with a lot of taste. I remembered the stashed-away puff pastry for such an occasion, and I immediately knew what I wanted to bake.

A cream cheese danish is the perfect treat for breakfast or paired with coffee as an afternoon pick-me-up. With a block of cream cheese and fresh blueberries in the fridge, I set out to make pretty little danishes. They look bakery worthy, but didn't take any time to whip up. Shall we get to baking now?!

  • What You'll Need
    • 1 package puff pastry sheets
    • 8 oz block of cream cheese, softened
    • 1 TSP vanilla extract
    • 1/3 cup sugar
    • 1 egg
    • 1 TSP water
    • Confectioners sugar
    • Fresh blueberries

  • What You'll Do
    • Let the puff pastry thaw, but don't let it get warm. Begin working with it once it can be rolled out, but is still cold - set out about 45 minutes before you are ready to bake.
    • While waiting for the pastry sheets to thaw, you can begin whipping up the cream cheese mixture. Combine the softened cream cheese, vanilla extract, and sugar. Whip until thoroughly combined. Store in the fridge until ready to use.
    • Preheat the oven to 425°.
    • Once the dough is thawed, you will want to roll each pastry sheet out to 12x12 square.
    • Then cut out 4x4 squares. Following the diagram below, you will fold and cut the pastry in order to create the criss-cross border of the danish.
    • Place each danish onto a parchment-paper lined baking sheet.
    • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. ONLY brush the egg wash over the outer border (not the center square).
    • Spoon a dollop of the cream cheese mixture into the center square of the pastry.
    • Place four blueberries in the cream cheese mixture and lightly press down to secure them.
    • Now bake for 8-10 minutes (may take up to 12 minutes) or until the puff pastry is golden brown.
    • Let the danishes cool for a couple of minutes, then dust with confectioners sugar. Enjoy right away or store in the fridge and enjoy cold or reheated for 1-2 days.
