Holiday Scents

November 13, 2013

I am a firm believer that, not only should your home look beautiful with all the holiday décor, but it should smell like the holidays too. Candles are always the easiest go-to for making your home smell of sweet cinnamon pumpkin or balsam pine. But, I wanted to try out something different to create a scent that would waft all throughout the house, all day long. And I found the exact combination of ingredients on a warm stove-top eye that made my house smell like a wonderful combination of fall and winter/Thanksgiving and Christmas. A whole orange cut into sections, a tablespoon of whole cloves, 4 cinnamon sticks, and half a teaspoon of nutmeg in a pot of barley simmering water (turned between medium and low heat) was the scent I had been looking for. Such a simple and affordable way to make the house smell like the best time of the year. We ended up leaving our homemade potpourri on the stove for a day and half, and the amazing smell never diminished. Try it, you'll love it! And if you have any combination of ingredients you combine to create a lovely smell throughout your home, I'm all ears! Next time, I'm thinking a combination of pine and cranberries would be quite lovely.
